How much stress do you deal with each day? I ask after a stressful week myself in which I just wanted to eat a tub of ice cream by the end of it. If you’re like me, you’re been wondering how to heal the adrenals with essential oils! I love taking a holistic approach to health where I can and help you do the same.

Stress is all around us. I have started waking up already stressed out, before the day begins! I’m not a full time Holistic Health blogger just yet and my daytime job can be very stressful. Most of it is unnecessary too. Other people make things way more stressful than they need to be, can you relate?

Stress can be related to the frustration of standing in long lines, driving in heavy traffic, or the stress of having to complete projects on time. The body also considers exercise a kind of stress, which is actually a good stress.

The thing is, our body can’t tell the difference between the different types of stressors we go through. It perceives something is wrong and tries to balance itself. We have our adrenal glands to thank for that, along with the cortisol hormone.

The release of cortisol is a actually a good thing, but when we are constantly stressed out, the cortisol lingers in our system and it turns into chronic stress. This is not good for the adrenals!

So in light of my overall stressful and needing to unwind, I thought it’d be great to discuss how to heal the adrenals with essential oils!

What Are The Adrenal Glands?

The Adrenal Glands are small glands that are part of the endocrine system. They sit on either side of the kidneys right above the abdomen. Contrary to popular belief, they don’t work alone, rather alongside two other glands. Together, they make up the HPA Axis (Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis). Their main purpose is to regulate the body’s response to stress, but they influence much more.

The adrenal glands pretty much have a say in every process in the body, including:

  • Reproduction
  • Appetite
  • Blood Sugar control
  • Stress Management
  • Growth
  • Digestion
  • Sleep
  • Blood Pressure
  • Metabolic Rate
  • Protein and Carb Synthesis

What hormones do the adrenal glands produce?

The Hypothalamus signals the adrenal glands to produce hormones and release them into our circulatory system, where they travel to different organs such as the thyroid gland or kidneys to be used by those organ systems. So let’s take a look at some of these hormones!


Aldosterone helps regulate blood pressure, maintains electrolyte levels, and pH balance in the body.

Sex Hormones

The adrenal glands produce the sex hormones, DHEA, DHEA S, and Androstenedione which are converted to testosterone and estrogen in both men and women.


The most well-known hormone, and the focus of this post in how to heal adrenals with essential oils, is cortisol. There is always a minimal level of cortisol in body. It’s responsible for keeping inflammation down, controlling your sleep cycle, regulating blood pressure and insulin levels, and boost your energy to deal with stress.

The Adrenal glands produce cortisol in response to any kind of stress or physical exertion and regulates the body’s immune, nervous and cardiovascular systems in order to do so.


Epinephrine, norepinephrine, and dopamine are released in response to immediate stress events to manage the body’s response. They have a direct effect on the nervous system. This is the adrenaline rush you’d get in certain situations that allows you to keep going when you feel you have nothing left!

Adrenal Fatigue and Adrenal Burnout

Maintaining healthy adrenal gland function has been found to be important for maintaining general health due to the effects on many different physiological systems of the human body .

Adrenal Fatigue, also known as HPA Axis Dysfunction, is when your adrenals become damaged from chronic stress which leads to persistent physical symptoms like fatigue and inability to cope with life’s demands.

It’s important to keep in mind that stress here refers to all kinds of stress put on the body over a long period of time to include:

  • A diet high in sugar and processed foods
  • Getting an inadequate amount of sleep
  • Working shifts at work
  • Being around electromagnetic fields
  • Toxins, like BPA and pesticides, that enter the body
  • High levels of caffeine
  • Chronic and acute inflammation
  • Daily psychological stress
  • Exercising too much with little rest

Your body doesn’t know the difference in stress as we do. It just knows something is wrong and wants to fix it and all of the above are stressors that can lead to adrenal fatigue.

The adrenals will continuously release cortisol into the body in response. The issue is when we are experiencing constant stress. The cortisol remains elevated and never has a chance to recover. When the body responds to stress, it shuts down the digestive and reproductive systems, interferes with our sleep, because it thinks we need the extra energy to deal with the situation. The adrenals eventually shut down and become fatigued.

This is why self-care is so incredibly important! It is literally for your own health!

If adrenal fatigue becomes chronic, the below symptoms can occur:

  • chronic tiredness but inability to sleep
  • low blood sugar levels when hungry (even though your diet may be healthy)
  • poor digestion
  • weight gain despite exercising regularly
  • weak immunity
  • fertility issues

The best way to support this system is by focusing on lifestyle changes: reducing stressful situations where possible; getting adequate sleep; eating healthily with plenty of vegetables (especially leafy greens); practicing mindfulness meditation or yoga which improves relaxation techniques, spending more time outdoors with sunlight, and avoiding screens at night

Orange Essential Oil

The next essential oil is orange oil. For those who are struggling with excess cortisol, this oil has been shown to aid in adrenal support and hormone balance.

Orange essential oil is calming and relaxing which reduces stress hormones like cortisol by increasing oxygenation in cells. It also helps stimulate circulation which decreases inflammation and increases healthy cell growth through anti-aging effects including reducing wrinkles!

Mandarin Essential Oil

Mandarin oil is good for the adrenals because it’s soothing, stress reducing, and energizing. It soothes due to its anti-inflammatory properties and also has a calming effect on cortisol levels in your body.

The power of mandarin oil is that when you take a whiff or diffuse the scent into your home, this essential oil provides an instant energy boost by triggering serotonin production – making you feel more at ease with yourself as well as others around you.

It can be used both internally (through diffusing) or externally (topically). Topical use would consist of applying it on areas where there are aches and pains such as joints for arthritis relief. Internally will include taking one drop sublingually daily to maintain healthy hormone balance.

Roman Chamomile

Roman chamomile is a great remedy for stress-related adrenal fatigue. It works by soothing the nervous system and reducing anxiety.

It’s also a sedative that helps promote sleep, which is a key component of healing the body from any kind of trauma or chronic illness. Along with helping to balance hormones, it aids in digestion.

Essential Oil Blends

There are may oils you can blend together for added benefit in healing!

  • Lavender and Roman Chamomile, which can help with sleeping issues, anxiety and depression.
  • Spruce, Pine And Rosemary- Mix these oils with Grapeseed Carrier Oil and massage into your lower back for a quick and natural energy boost anytime throughout the day.
  • Diffuse lemon, basil and clary sage oils at your workstation to aid with concentration.
  • Put a blend of nutmeg, lavender, sweet orange and valerian in a base of jojoba oil before going to bed for a good night’s sleep

How to Use Essential Oils

Essential oils can be used in many ways:

  1. Use a Carrier Oil to dilute other essential oils and to allow better absorption into the skin, for general health benefits, such as improving mood or relieving pain.
  2. You can diffuse it to fragrance in the air. I really enjoy diffusing Frankincense.
  3. Make an essential oil roll on by mixing a couple of drops with pure grain alcohol (such as vodka) then transferring the mixture onto a cotton ball which is inserted inside a small glass bottle that has been cleaned well first. Shake before use and place near pulse points like temples, wrists, ankles, behind ears for relief from headaches, anxiety etc.
  4. Put one drop of the essential oil on finger tips then inhale deeply through nose for relief!
  5. Take an aromatherapy bath and put a few drops in your running bath water. Let the relaxing begin!
