6 Health Benefits of Drinking Lemon Water
Lemon water has been found to be rich in antioxidants, which are also what gives it its distinctive flavor. Lemon is a natural source of Vitamin C and potassium! Drinking lemon water is great for your skin! And since lemon juice is naturally acidic, drinking a cup of hot lemon water every morning will give you an energy boost that’ll last all day long. If you’re looking for a fresh new way to start your day off right or just want to get more vitamins into your diet without taking supplements, this could be the solution!
It Cleanses Your System
Lemon water is a great way to detox your system, because of the high water content, vitamin C and citric acid!
Citric acid is an excellent cleansing agent for the body. It helps speed up the metabolism of macronutrients and aids in digestion. The citric acid in lemon water helps the liver process and flush out toxins and waste more efficiently. Drinking lemon water can also help to improve your body’s metabolic rate, which will help you lose weight faster!
This is one of the most affordable cleanses you can do! No expensive quick cleanses here.
Lemon Water is Great For Your Skin
Lemon water is great for your skin because it is a natural way to cleanse and detoxify the skin. Lemon water contains citric acid which can help remove excess oil, dirt and bacteria from the skin’s surface.
Lemons are also very high in Vitamin C, which is needed to help stimulate collagen production! Collagen production decreases with age, so drinking lemon water will help with that!
You’re left with hydrated glowing skin!
It Helps You Lose Weight
If you are currently trying to lose weight and get healthy, lemon water is the perfect thing to start with. Not only are you getting water with vitamin C from the lemon, but you are adding to the flavor of your water. This can help to encourage you to drink more of the water each day, which as you know is important for weight loss. Lemon water can also help to boost your metabolism, especially if you drink warm lemon water in the morning before consuming anything else.
Vitamin C is Great For Your immune System
Speaking of the vitamin C in lemon water, you are also helping to give your immune system a nice boost. All of the nutrients in lemons are going to transfer to the water, so you get those nutrients for optimal health. Vitamin C is good for your immune system, helping you to avoid the cold, flu, and various other illnesses. Try one or two glasses of lemon water each day for general health.
Great for healthy digestion
Lemons are an excellent source of vitamin C. This is important for a number of reasons, but it’s especially important because the body uses this nutrient to make stomach acid that breaks down food and nutrients during digestion. If you don’t have enough stomach acid, your ability to digest food will be impaired. But if you drink lemon water on a regular basis, the citric acid in lemons will help to stimulate production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach. So not only does drinking lemon water help with healthy digestion by providing an easily absorbed form of vitamin C, it also helps increase digestive juices needed for proper digestion.
Gives you fresh breath
When you drink lemon juice, the citric acid in it kills bacteria and other microorganisms that cause bad breath. Lemon can also stimulate saliva and prevent a dry mouth, the leading cause of bad breath.
Moreover, the vitamin C contained in lemon juice has been shown to reduce inflammation of the mouth lining.
So if you want fresh breath and all-around better health, try drinking some hot water with fresh squeezed lemon juice in it every morning before breakfast!
How to Make Lemon Water
Lemon water is not exactly what you think it might be. It’s not as simple as just adding a lemon slice to a glass of water. In order to reap all the health benefits, you’ll need more than just the flavor of lemon water. You’ll need the concentrated lemon juice in order to get the Vitamin C and other nutrients!
When making lemon water, these are the things to pay attention too:
1) You need actual juice from fresh lemons
2) The concentration matters. The more lemon juice, the better
3) First thing in the morning, drink a warm cup of lemon water. The rest of the day, enjoy a refreshing cold glass. Hot lemon water in the morning will help boost the metabolism first thing.
Make your own easy lemon water recipe
Here’s an easy recipe you can reference when making your own!
You’ll need 1/4 cup cold water, 1/3 cup boiling water, and juice from half a lemon.
Use a lemon reamer or a handheld juicer to extract as much lemon juice as possible from the lemon!
First, add the lemon juice to an empty glass. Then add the hot water, followed by the cold. I like to do it this way to allow the hot water to really mix with the lemon juice before drinking it warm.
What can you add to lemon water?
Adding ingredients to make lemon water more interesting, flavorful, and nutritious is a great way to experiment with the taste. Here are some suggestions of things you can add.
Ginger and fresh lemon juice make for a great flavor combination, as they are both loaded with vitamins and minerals. Grate the ginger root right before adding it to your glass of water- this will ensure you get all the nutrients from its roots into your drink!
For every half a lemon you use for juice, use about a half inch knob from the ginger root.
Adding honey to lemon water can do wonders for your ulcers, digestive health, and even provide antibacterial properties. Not only that but you’ll also get more antioxidants in your body with the added addition of one little teaspoon!
If at all possible, use raw honey or organic to avoid all the extra additives and preservatives you’ll find in regular honey. Honey blends well in warm water, so add it to your first cup of the day!
Tips for Drinking Lemon Water Daily
Here are my top tips for adding all the health benefits of drinking lemon water daily into your life!
Drink it upon waking up
Although you can drink lemon water at anytime in the day, it is best to do so first thing when your stomach has not already been exposed to anything else. This will help create a routine.
Try it within an hour of waking and before you brush your teeth.
Drink up between meals
Drinking lemon water in between meals helps you stay full when snacking. If you are hungry for a snack, drink a full glass of lemon water first before deciding if your hunger needs to be satisfied or not. You may find that it is enough to keep you filled until the next meal and will promote weight loss at the same time!
Make some infused lemon water the night before
I like to make a pitcher of lemon water the night before because it’s convenient and also makes for better tasting beverage. My favorite combination is lemon and cucumber. But you can also try the below and see what you like best.
Lemon and Blackberries
Lemon and blackberry together are a great combination of sweet and sour.
You’ll also end up with a beautiful dark-purple colored water.
Lemon, Thyme, and Rosemary
Lemon, thyme, and rosemary are a great combination of flavors that compliment each other well! It’s also fun to look at in a glass container!
Lemon, Strawberry, and Mint
This doesn’t seem like it should work, but it really does! A minty strawberry lemon beverage is something everyone needs in their life!
