This is going to be one of those super simple posts that makes you realize what you never realized before. Huh? I’ll explain. When I was a kid, I thought all fruits were round. But when I got older and started exploring the grocery store more, I found out there are in fact fruits of many other shapes and of all sizes! I was also a super picky kid and really only ate oranges when it came to fruit.
The most common fruit that isn’t round fruit is the apple. Other fruits that aren’t round include bananas and pineapples. In fact, if you think about it, I think you’ll find there are more fruits that aren’t round than ARE!
What Fruit Isn’t Round?
There are many fruits that aren’t actually round! Check out my list below of 19 fruits that aren’t round. Below you will find many common fruits you can easily find in the grocery store and several others which might not be as easy to find.
Pineapple is the best fruit that isn’t round that is most commonly mistaken for a citrus fruit. It is actually part of the Bromelaid family. This tasty tropical treat is one of the more popular types of non-round fruits. It has a leathery skin around it and tastes great by itself as a snack, in cottage cheese or with Greek yogurt.
Pineapples originate in South America and the Caribbean, which is where, the first European, Christopher Columbus, tried it. The natives of the Caribbean referred it to as “the excellent fruit.” At the time it was exotic and new and combined with the sweet taste, it made a wonderful delicacy!
In fact, before the spread of artificial sugar and sweeteners in foods, fruits WERE the sweet treat. Pineapples became the symbol of hospitality at dinner parties, serving as the centerpiece of an elegant scene.

Another fruit that isn’t round is the banana. I didn’t care for bananas growing up, but they really grew on me. This fruit is long and ranges from brown to yellow to green, depending on ripeness. Bananas are a great source of iron, fiber, potassium and vitamin C.
They are also a great source of antioxidants. Those little brown spots are good news and indicate the banana is ready to eat! It will taste sweeter and have more health benefits! Just don’t let it turn completely black and you’ll be fine.
This is probably my favorite on the list! I can literally eat strawberries all day long. Even though we often think of berries as being round, strawberries have a triangular shape in nature, but can also be a bit more odd in shape with some round spots.
Did you know strawberries that we know of and eat are actually a hybrid of two wild species found in North America and Chile?
It shouldn’t come as a big surprise, but they have many health benefits. They are full of Vitamin C, manganese and potassium.
The high amount of antioxidants help with heart health and help control blood sugar levels.
Talk about a flavorful fruit that is good for you too? There’s nothing not to love about strawberries.
Scientifically know as Vaccinium cory, the blueberry is another fruit that isn’t perfectly round, they are shaped more like ovals. Blueberries make a great tasting healthy snack that can be enjoyed alone, with cottage cheese, Greek yogurt or even in a jam or jelly.
They have blue skin which turns purple when ripe, juicy flesh filled with small edible seeds that taste sweet but sour at the same time.
Blueberries are very good for you because they contain nutrients such as: vitamin C, manganese, potassium, fiber, folate – all of which help maintain a healthy heart. Studies show that eating blueberries can improve memory and slow the progression of age-related cognitive disorders too.
Blueberries are not only good for your heart, but they also help to regulate blood sugar levels because they contain a high level of natural sugars. That, combined with the protein, balance out how quickly the sugar enters the bloodstream.
Grapes have the shape of a sphere that is slightly flattened at the poles. I guess oval is a better description! These fruits have been grown in vineyards for centuries and are one of the most popular fruit to grow because they’re easy to produce, available year-round and affordable.
Grapes come in many colors, red, white, black, and green. And they all have different benefits!
Red and dark grapes contain a polyphenol in the skin called resveratrol which has antioxidant cancer fighting properties, anti-aging, as well as anti-inflammatory benefits.
White grapes contain antioxidants as well but do not have the same polyphenol resveratrol.
Black grapes are a hybrid of red and green grapes, containing both polyphenols and antioxidants.
Ultimately, the healthiest grapes are the ones you will end up eating. Grapes are low in calories and have natural sugar in them, making them a sweet snack! I enjoy grapes with Greek yogurt in the afternoon.

- Kiwi is a type of fruit that is not round
- Kiwis have an oval shape, and are sometimes called eggfruit.
- They’re green on the outside with brown fuzzy skin inside, their flesh ranges from white to almost black in color.
- The kiwi fruit smells like bananas and pineapple combined.
Some health benefits of eating kiwi fruit:
- Kiwi fruit is high in fiber and potassium, as well as Vitamins C and E, great for the immune system!
- Eating kiwis during pregnancy may help reduce the risk of preeclampsia.
- One kiwi fruit has about 45 calories, 13 grams of carbohydrates and two grams of protein.
Fun Facts About Kiwi:
- The word “kiwi” has been used to describe people from New Zealand
Kiwis are best found in warmer tropical climates!
Lemons kinda have the shape of a football and are usually yellow. Lemons also have a sour taste to them because of the acid in it. They are high in vitamin C which benefits your immune system! One lemon has about 25 calories per serving with no fat or protein content.
I actually enjoy eating lemons plain, like you would an orange, but that isn’t everyone’s cup of tea!
There are many other ways to eat a lemon like squeezing the juice into water or adding it to salad dressing.
Or make lemonade on a hot summer day!
Limes are similar in shape to a lemon, but slightly smaller in nature. Limes have a more sour and bitter taste than lemons and are also higher in Vitamin C. Limes also have no fat or protein content per serving but they’re usually green with an acidic flavor due to their acidity.
Limes, like lemons, are very healthy. They are a good source for vitamin C as well as other antioxidants. Limes are low in calories and sodium content, which makes it healthier than lemons. Limes are usually eaten with salt (tequila shots anyone?) but their flavor can be reduced if you eat them without any extra seasoning or citrus fruit
Limes are mostly consumed for the juice they provide, but are also used in cooking! Some popular recipes that use limes are :
- Green goddess salad
- Key lime pie
- Thai chicken with basil and coconut milk curry paste.
Apricots are shaped like an odd sphere and has a very soft skin
They are eaten by slicing them in half and then peeling the skin off of the fruit. They can be eaten fresh or cooked, but some people prefer to make a delicious jam with them!
The apricot season lasts between June and September, just in case you wonder why you don’t see them year round in the grocery stores.
Apricots are also sweet in nature, which makes for an excellent fruit to consume because it has a great flavor that’s not too sour or dry. If you like the taste of a peach, chances are you’ll enjoy an apricot too!
Of course, the apricot has some great health benefits along with being delicious!
It’s great for lowering cholesterol and the antioxidants help prevent cancer.
Fun fact about apricots? The apricot plant can grow to be twenty feet tall! Definitely not an indoor plant.
Apples are the fruit I first think of as not being round in shape.
Apples taste sweet and crispy with a slightly sour undertone.
Health benefits of apples include that they can help prevent cancer and decrease cholesterol levels in your blood stream.
What is an interesting fact about apples?
- Apples do not ripen after picking them from
- Because apples do not ripen after picking them from the tree, they can be eaten immediately or stored for months in a cool place.
- Apples are grown on trees and have been around since biblical times before being introduced to Europe by Christopher Columbus
- The state fruit of Iowa is apple
- The most popular variety of apple used in baking pies is the Empire apple
The average apple is about three inches wide, with a thickness of about one inch and weight usually being between six to seven ounces.
A medium-sized apple contains only 72 calories, making it the perfect low calorie fruit if you are looking to lose weight!
The cherry is a fruit that is not round, but an odd shape similar to an apple. Coming from trees and bushes which grow up to six meters in height, cherries have an average lifespan of five years. Cherries can be consumed immediately or preserved for months by freezing them whole without removing stems.
Some health benefits of cherries include:
- reduced risk of heart disease
- prevention against Alzheimer’s Disease and brain shrinkage
. They’re known as the “state fruit” of Oregon!
Nutritional facts of cherries:
- One cup of cherries has about 98 calories
- Cherries are a good source for Vitamin C, manganese and potassium.
Eggplant is a nightshade plant, and is related to tomatoes plants. It’s commonly mistaken for a vegetable, however it is a fruit!
Eggplants are not round; they’re more oval or egg-shaped. They grow in a variety of colors including white, purple, pink, green, and brownish black. They typically have shiny skin that has bumps all over it because the fruit stem grows on the outer side
- One medium-sized eggplant has about 35 calories
- folate (folic acid), potassium
- Aids in digestion
- Controls blood pressure.
I love slicing eggplant, brushing some olive oil on the flesh, sprinkling with parmesan and sautéing in the skillet.
5 Exotic Fruits That Are Not Round
So now that we’ve covered some pretty common fruits which are not round, let’s look at some more exotic fruits!
The jackfruit is next on the list. It is grown in Southeast Asia, specifically in Sri Lanka. It is a giant fruit that can grow up to 100 pounds and be 12 inches long. The jackfruit has an outer skin which resembles the artichoke’s leaves when it is cut open. Inside of this skin are pods with seeds on them that resemble beans or peanuts. Some have described the taste as similar to a pear or pineapple.
The Jackfruit is rich in dietary fiber, beta-carotene, and potassium. It has twice the amount of vitamin C as oranges do. The fruit also contains calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc and selenium minerals that are important for bone growth and development.
14. Lychee Fruit
The shape of the lychee fruit is oval and it is covered in a tough, reddish-brown rind. The interior of the lychee fruit contains small black seeds that are surrounded by a creamy white pulp. On average, an individual can eat between 15 to 20 lychees in one sitting.
This fruit is known for its high water content which fills the fruit with nutrients and vitamins. Lychees are the perfect natural hangover remedy because of their high water content. Drinking plenty of fluids during and after a night of drinking can flush the toxins from your system while replenishing much needed electrolytes to help with dehydration.
Lychee fruit is high in protein, fiber, vitamin C, and potassium. It also contains iron which can boost energy levels as well as help reduce anemia symptoms.
The fruit is native to China, but now grows in many other countries as well including India, Madagascar, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Malaysia and Brazil.
15. Mangosteen Fruit
The mangosteen fruit is a light purple and white, spiky-looking fruit that is grown in Southeast Asia. The mangosteen has been nicknamed “the queen of fruits” because it tastes so good (sweet with just the right amount of sour). It looks like an armor plated pineapple on the outside but inside there are segments not unlike those found in grapefruit
The health benefits of mangosteen fruit are fairly extensive. The main thing to know is that, similar to grapefruit, it is great for weight loss! It also has high amounts of vitamin C (more than oranges) so it’s great for an immune system boost!
Mangosteen also has high concentratios of antioxidants, which fight free radicals in the body and has anti inflammatory properties!
Mangosteen fruit can be eaten raw (cut into pieces) but is more commonly used to make juice.
The downside of eating the mangosteen fruit is that it can cause stomach discomfort or diarrhea when consumed in overly large quantities, especially if you’re not used to eating fiber.
It’s also important to note that the mangosteen fruit is not available year-round because there are limited growing seasons due to weather conditions, but will typically be around late spring through summer.
The Rambutan is a fruit found in the hot tropical climate of Southeast Asia that is about the size of a golf ball. It’s spiky red skin might be off putting to some, but its taste has the right mix of sweet and creamy with a hint of sour.
Normally I’d recommend eating the peel of any fruit, but not on this one! It’s quite poisonous to eat.
- Take a sharp knife and make an incision in the hairy peel along the middle
- Be careful to not cut the flesh
- Take you thumbs and split open and peel the skin off
- Remove the seed
- Enjoy the flesh which resembles a small peeled egg!
Rambutans are high in Vitamin C and Fiber!

“Rambut” is a Malay word which means hairy! Very fitting for this fruit, don’t you think?
The last fruit that isn’t round on this list is the Durian, also known as the “king of fruits!”
It has a large, spiny husk that may be intimidating to some but inside lies succulent white flesh with an addictively sweet smell. It’s quite large in size at 12 inches long and 6 inches in diameter, weighing between 2 and 7 pounds.
You probably won’t find a Durian the next time you go shopping, as they are only found in the most tropical of regions, like Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. They usually don’t last very long in climates that don’t stay above 72 degrees Fahrenheit. But if you are taking a trip to Southeast Asia anytime soon, see if you can get your hands
