What is Bronchitis?

Bronchitis is a very treatable and manageable medical condition which inflames the lining of the bronchial tubes. This can make the airway to and from the lungs very difficult to transport. Common symptoms include:

  • Coughing up dark excess mucus
  • Shortness of breath
  • Runny nose
  • Sneezing
  • Wheezing
  • Sore Throat
  • Easily fatigued
  • Muscle aches
  • Backaches

Bronchitis can either be acute or chronic. Acute bronchitis comes on suddenly and is often referred to as a “chest cold.” Chronic bronchitis continues to occur over and over.

What Causes Bronchitis?

Infections

Both bacterial and viral infections are a prominent cause of bronchitis. Hemophilus influenza viruses account for 85-95% of bronchitis in both adults and children.

Streptococcus pneumoniae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and Bordetella pertussis are some of the common bacterial causative agents of bronchitis in all age groups. Infections are the primary cause of acute bronchitis.

Environmental irritants

Exposure to environmental irritants such as smoke from cigarette smoke, dust, and chemical fumes are also a major cause of bronchitis. Long term exposure to these environmental irritants can lead to chronic bronchitis.

Gastroesophageal disease (GERD)

Statistics show that at least 20% of the overall American population has GERD. GERD is a digestive disease in which one’s stomach acid flows back to the esophagus.

This, in turn, causes one’s throat to become irritated and inflamed, experience chest pains and coughing episodes, all of which occur in bronchitis.

Lowered Overall Immunity

Immunocompromised individuals include pregnant mothers, infants, senior citizens aged 65 years and above, and people who have chronic illnesses. People with a lowered immunity have a higher risk of contracting bronchitis.
